Annotation

The name for this collection of ceiling lights is based on the Greek word for “appearance”. According to the Platonic theory of Ideas, “phenomena” are merely ephemeral impressions of eternal and transcendent forms. That is why DECHEM studio decided to use basic geometric shapes and a similarly paradoxical material – glass. The solid but fragile structure with subtle gradation in color was created by gradually blowing the mercurial, hot and malleable molten glass into a mould.

Bio

The DECHEM studio (est. 2012) was founded by designers and life partners Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek, who first met at the glassmaking school in Nový Bor. While Michaela went on to study product design at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, Jakub continued honing his skill in glass processing, technologies and lighting production. Connecting the endless palette of diverse glassmaking techniques, textures and colors became the foundation for the designers’ collaborative work. Since its beginning, the glass design studio has been influenced by the contemporary approach to design while respecting centuries of glassmaking tradition. The central features of their work include hand-crafting in Czech workshops and designing original collections.

About the company

Bohemia Machine started in Světlá nad Sázavou as a manufacturer of glassmaking machines intended mainly for automated decorative cutting. In 2010, the company launched its own brand of drinkware – Bomma – which gradually led to the production of crystal glass luminaires in 2017. Today, it is one of the most successful Czech manufacturers of designer lighting. Under the supervision of Art Director Václav Mlynář, the company regularly collaborates with local designers such as Boris Klimek, Olgoj Chorchoj, Rony Plesl and DECHEM.
